    Hello Cyclist.

Lot’s going on in the coming weeks. Let’s dive in.

Join the Buffalo Lodge Resort and the Buffalo Lodge Tribe on the 3rd of May as they celebrate Daniel Giffin in his ongoing battle with brain cancer. You can walk/run the 5k or bicycle the beautiful 15-mile bike ride. The start/finish is at the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort with an after party. This family friendly event benefits the Brave Daniel Irrevocable Trust and Children's Hospital Colorado. See the link below to register.

The long awaited Women’s Ride is fast approaching. The ride will be every other Friday starting May 2nd. This will be a casual ride, leaving from different locations around town. Sign up link is below.

Join us for the Annual Season kick-off Progressive Dinner Ride on Sunday, 4 May. The ride starts from Woodmen Park-n-Ride and is 21 miles in length. The first and last stops (appetizers/salads and desserts) are pot lucks and the main course is catered. Please bring something to share to the start and it will be driven to the appropriate stop.

The annual Ride of Silence will be held Wednesday, 21 May at 7:00 PM. This is a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways and to raise awareness that cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists. Click the link below for more information. Volunteers are also needed. Click here to register to volunteer.

On 26 May, we are invited to join the first annual combined group ride from the Buffalo Lodge with SoCo Velo, the Buffalo Tribe and COS Racing.  There will be three distances/levels for all experience levels.  This is a social ride, no drop with a sweep. Please wear your CSCC team jersey to this event.

Colorado Springs Cycling has adopted a section of trail and we need volunteers. This work is an opportunity to take an active role in the beautification of our local parks and trails. The section of trail is along the south part of Shooks Run Trail from Pikes Peak Ave to Fountain Blvd. It is one mile in length. We will meet twice a month through October as weather permits. The first date is Thursday, May 8th at 6 PM. Details are below.

As a reminder, our club has raised its dues. As of April 1st, dues increased to $30 per year for individuals and $50 per year for families (two adults and any children living in the household). The last time dues were increased was 2016.

This is also a reminder that we have a private Strava club https://www.strava.com/clubs/colorado-springs-cycling-club If you are on Strava and not part of the group, we encourage you to join. It’s a great way to see and encourage your fellow club mates. Due to some recent “house cleaning”, some members were removed by accident. Just click to join and we’ll get you back in.

As mentioned above, we have some new rides in the works. These rides, like all of our rides are dependent on ride leaders and we are looking for more. Our next ride leader training is scheduled for May 3rd. Please reach out to Sara Hill if interested at sleonahill@yahoo.com

    And now for some tidbits:

As a reminder, if you are going to attend one of our club rides or events, please sign up on Meet Up. This lets the ride leader or event creator know of your intent to participate and if you are running late, the ride leader may, at their discretion, wait for you and or try to contact you before the ride starts. Also, if the ride is canceled due to unforeseen circumstances at the last minute, the ride leader can reach out to the individual participants to let them know. Finally, if no one has registered for a ride by 8 PM the night before, the ride may likely become a “show and go.”

    Hello Cyclist.

Spring has sprung and April 1st is next week. Our usual rides are on tap for next week.

One of our new rides is now live on Meet Up: The Lucky Hill Ride lead by Nate Nassif will focus on climbing to get ready for events such as The 719 Ride and Cycle to the Summit. This will be a weekly Sunday afternoon ride beginning April 13th.

A few other new rides are in the works for this year. We are introducing a Wednesday evening social ride starting May 28th. A once a month (for now) Saturday Morning Gravel Ride will start April 12th. Also in the works are a Women’s Ride and mountain bike rides, details of which are being worked out and no start date has been made yet.

Colorado Springs Cycling Club will undergo a name change. The “club” wants to apply for 501(c)(3) tax status and as such has to drop “club” from our name. There are financial benefits to the club and individuals and organization that donate funds to us. A future email will be coming out for you to vote on the two proposed names: “Colorado Springs Cycling” and “COS Cycling”.

Our club is raising its dues. Beginning April 1st, 2025, dues will increase $30 per year for individuals and $50 per year for families (two adults and any children living in the household). The last time dues were increased was 2016.

As mentioned above, we have some new rides in the works. These rides, like all of our rides are dependent on ride leaders and we are looking for more. Our next ride leader training is scheduled for May 3rd. Please reach out to Sara Hill if interested at sleonahill@yahoo.com

I found this YouTube video to be helpful in understanding the differences between road and gravel bikes and road and gravel tires.  https://youtu.be/C6vkABW59vQ  Rather than two bikes, I have a gravel bike with two sets of wheels that I use for road and gravel riding.

The latest edition of the Club’s Newsletter, the February 2020 edition of the Bent Fork Chronicles, is now available for your reading pleasure. Just CLICK HERE to be able to enjoy the latest information of interest to the Colorado Springs cycling community.

In this edition, there are a variety of articles that we believe will interest Club members and others in the Pikes Peak Region. Take a look at our Editor’s Comments for details about this newsletter’s contents.

We’ve enjoyed pulling together and publishing the Bent Fork since 2009. Unfortunately, all good things must come to a close. This is the last edition of the Bent Fork that Sharon and Dale will publish. After a decade plus of being creative with our editorial work, we’re stepping down. We’re turning the reins over the next person(s) who would like to contribute their writing and editorial skills for the Club.

Enjoy reading what we’ve published for you in our final edition. And, as always, stay safe when you get out there and ride!

    Best Regards,

    Sharon Boyd & Dale Campbell

As with previous issues over the years since Sharon and Dale have been the Bent Fork Editors (that’s since October 2010), we’ve continued to provide a variety of articles that we believe will interest Club members and cyclists in the Colorado Springs community. These include:

    • Prez Says updates and comments

    • Introduction to Gravel Rides
    • Travelogues from Club members
    • Interesting articles about cycling and cycling safety
    • Membership updates, and

Take a look at what we’ve provided for you with this 1Q2019 edition. Let us know if you have any suggestions for improvement. In the meantime, we’ll continue to investigate various publication techniques to better improve the appearance and content of the Bent Fork!

    Sara Hill: Membership Coordinator

Each month more and more cyclists in Colorado Springs have either renewed their membership or have become new members of the Colorado Spring Cycling Club (CSCC).  To become a member of the Club, annual dues for an individual membership are $21, and for a family membership, the annual dues are $28.  Membership not only provides you with the opportunity to participate in our many biking and social activities, but also enables you to be covered by the Club’s insurance while participating in a Club sanctioned activity.

Note that signing up on Meetup is not the same as becoming a member of the Colorado Springs Cycling Club.  Meetup enables those on the Meetup list to view and receive notices about the Club’s calendar of events.  But, being on Meetup does not enable the insurance coverage and does not enable attending certain Club events throughout the year.  Please pass this update along to anyone who might be on Meetup but has not yet joined the Club.

With the new website support, renewal notices will be emailed automatically, including grace period notices.  Additionally, when logging into the website, notification of dues will automatically pop up starting in the renewal month.  Membership is automatically dropped 60 days after renewal date if the dues are still unpaid.  Further, renewal notices are mailed once a month, as are past due notices.

    MEMBERSHIP REMINDERS:
     (1) Family memberships are eligible for two adult online logins. With each login, members can comment on the message boards or respond to surveys independently.  If you wish to have a second adult login, please contact Membership at
membership@bikesprings.org.  Click on the “Join” button on the website homepage.  Provide the following information: Name on membership account, secondary member's name and email along with a preferred username. If you have a preference for billing identity, indicate this as well.

    (2) Has your personal information changed?  Don't forget you can update your mailing address, phone numbers and email at any time by logging into the membership area and clicking the "Change Contact/Profile Information" link under Member Information.  You can even change your username.

    (3) You can check your membership payment status online - and pay online as well.

If you have questions regarding membership, please contact Sara Hill, Membership Coordinator.
